Women are helping Coakley to blow past her fundraising goals. Shanti Fry, one of three co-chairs of today’s women’s fundraising lunch (not affiliated with this blog) said that the event’s original goal had been to raise $75 thousand, but that contributions actually had exceeded $150 thousand. A luncheon attendee later told me that Emily’s list founder Ellen Malcolm’s speech had gotten her so excited that she had been waving her napkin in the air and was rushing home to make phone calls asking friends to contribute.

The push is on today, because tonight is the FEC reporting deadline by which the campaign has said it hopes to raise $1 million. If the results of today’s luncheon are representative of fundraising overall, the campaign may soon announce some big numbers.

Malcolm pointed out that those of us not in the big-ticket-fundraiser circle are important, too. In a post-luncheon interview, she said

This race is a great example of why small donors can make a big difference in politics, because you’ve got one candidate heres that’s worth $400 million dollars and can write Lord-knows-what-size check. You’ve got another candidate who is a member of Congress and for years went to all these lobbyist cocktail parties and got money from the special interest PACs. And you’ve got Martha, who is really tapping into a network of people [who say,] ”I’m going to send 25 bucks, I’m going to send 50, I’m going to send 100.” And at the end of the day, all of those little contributions are what offsets the special interest money.

One of the things that I’ve been thrilled about today is the energy level to help her in this race. I think we’re going to see in this next filing, and I think we’re going to see as this campaign goes on, a lot of small donors… And it’s exciting; it’s energizing.

As to why small donors are behind Coakley, Malcom told the press

They see a fighter who understands their lives.

Women cast more ballots than men, yet men give more money to political candidates. Womens’ votes matter in politics. Additionally, our money matters too. Yet women lack in political money giving. According to The Women’s Campaign Forum report from “Vote With Your Purse: Harnessing the Power of Women’s Political Giving”

Unfortunately, over the last two decades women’s high dollar contributions to candidates have remained unchanged, with women consistently comprising only 28% of contributions of $1,000 or more (single or combined).

Is there a connection between our reluctance to invest money in our political candidates with women’s low numbers in our government? Women are 51% of our population, yet we are only 17% of our Senate. We do not have parity in our government. We do not have equal representation. Gender Parity is a topic that is gaining momentum around the world and here in the United States. Women deserve gender parity in our government.

Eight million more women than men voted in 2008. Can we start to believe in our power as voters and extend that power from our purses?

For gender parity to become a reality in the United States women must exert the power that comes from our purses. If we remain reluctant to open our purses for women candidates we stop ourselves from having equal representation in government.

The report also states:

For better or worse, money is a critical factor in acquiring political power. When women lag behind in giving, it means that women’s political will is not fully reflected, and women’s political power diminished.

Martha Coakely is poised to be Massachusetts’ first woman senator. Money is essential for her victory. Her opponents Pagliuca is self-funding his campaign. Rep. Capuano has a big head start in fundraising.

Let’s open our purses and support Martha.

Part of “leveling the political playing field” involves raising money for candidates. Everyone knows it is much harder for female politicians to raise money. So that tilts the field against Martha. In addition, federal election laws prohibit rolling over funds remaining from state campaigns into bids for federal office. So Martha is starting with $0. A huge second tilt of the field. Meanwhile, her potential rivals, all male, have millions.

So, we think it is fair to say, Martha needs women’s support – from all over the country.

We have set up a fundraising page with Act Blue. All funds raised go directly to Martha Coakley’s campaign via Act Blue.

We’ve set our first goal: ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!

Too low! You say?

Then help prove it by donating now. Lets see how fast we can get to the $1K, then we’ll double it and double it again!

Let’s show that Martha has unleashed the power of the sisterhood. It is time to “level that political playing field” now.

We’re on a mission- and we will succeed-Go Martha!
