Congratulations, US Senate NomineeMartha Coakley!
Martha Coakley is now the Democratic nominee for the US Senate, with an opportunity to not only be a strong leader, but also to bring women’s representation in the Senate up to 18%! Congratulations to her and thank you to all who have worked so hard on her behalf.
We at Women for Coakley have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this historic effort. It is now time for us to return our attention to other aspects of our lives, so this will be our final post.
Remember that Coakley still needs our support in the general election, so mark your calendars for January 19.
We’ll meet again on another campaign trail. Thanks for the company along this one.

Women Across the US Rally Behind Martha Coakley for US Senate
Cross-posted with permission from The New Agenda.

Who will replace Ted Kennedy, a legend in US politics? The national eye is on the special primary election for the US Senate which will be held tomorrow December 8th. Many say this Democratic primary will decide the race in blue state Massachusetts.
Women from around the country want to have their say in this election. According to a review by The Boston Globe, women from EVERY STATE have donated to Martha Coakley’s campaign.
Political fund-raising has long been dominated by men, but for the Coakley campaign two-thirds of its donors are women, a review by the Globe of her campaign finance reports shows.

Four Points on Gender
Here are four thoughts on how gender is playing out in this race:
- WomenForCoakley team member Dr. Nancy Hopkins on unconscious gender biases in voting.
- An e-mailer’s perspective on Joan Vennochi’s Globe column about the Massachusetts Old Boy’s Network and David Bernstein’s Boston Phoenix‘ response about women benefiting from that network and yet still getting less than 15% of new elected slots.
- Howie Carr ’s Boston Herald column on henpecked husbands.
- Yours truly on the “babe” and “get a room” comments by Jim Braude and Margery Eagan on NECN
