Congresswoman Tsongas to endorse Coakley tomorrow
Proving yet again the importance of women in higher office, U.S. Representative Niki Tsongas is breaking from her male colleagues and endorsing Martha Coakley for U.S. Senate tomorrow.
The endorsement is scheduled to take place at 2:30 p.m. at the VFW Post 662 in Lowell.
I took this opportunity to review Massachusetts history of electing women to Congress. As we all know by now, Martha would be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. But what I didn’t know was that she’ll be the fifth woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Before Congresswoman Tsongas was elected in 2007, our delegation had been entirely male since 1983.
According to Women in Congress, some states that have had more women in Congress than Massachusetts are: South Carolina (5), Texas (7), Arkansas (5), and Tennessee (5).
So, thank you, Niki, for supporting Martha! We look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail!
